Making the most of your Supplement Program

Well informed Naturopaths and Integrated Doctors (being both orthodox and complementary health professionals) concur that along with good nutritional habits, a basic supplement program should include:

  • A full spectrum multi-vitamin (13 vitamins)
  • A full spectrum multi-mineral (over 70 trace minerals plus macro minerals required in larger doses)
  • Omega 3 essential fatty acids (fish oil/flaxseed oil)
  • Additional Vitamin C (as the multivitamin does not contain a sufficient dose)
  • Anti-oxidant (especially for people over 40 years old)

Many chronic health conditions can be attributed to long term malnutrition as a result of the way we farm our soils. For example, ten years of industrial farming strips trace minerals out of the soil; these nutrients are critical to the healthy functioning of the cells and the body.

The above listed nutrients taken in combination may provide and fortify the immune system with the tools to give the body what it needs, not only for healthy functioning, but nutrients taken in therapeutic doses will provide a new level of health described by Patrick Holford as Optimal Nutrition, a state of being whereby the body is not simply free of illness, but high in energy, vitality and free of physical and mental disease.

While it would be ideal for all individuals to either visit a respected, informed and registered Natural Health Practitioner or Integrated Doctor, the following doses are sufficiently low to ensure a safe program for most people, while giving the body the nutrients it needs to function adequately. Please note if you are pregnant, have heart disease or use any heavy medication you are advised to visit an informed health professional before you add any supplements to your diet.

Also note that the work of nutrients is cumulative. An immediate response for those engaged in a new supplement program is likely to be improved energy through the day with deeper sleeps at night, but it may be some weeks or months before other positive benefits are observed, as the body needs time to replenish and rebuild. Please be patient and allow this healing process to occur.

Further Information

A book written by Patrick Holford called The Optimum Nutrition Bible is a highly recommend read for anyone interested in restoring their health and obtaining optimum nutrition. This volume not only contains excellent reference information on nutrients and common diseases, but it’s also an engaging read and a fine complement to any family library. The book has been reported by British media as one of the top ten self-help books of all time.

Further information can also be obtained by researching the body of science termed Orthomolecular Medicine, which is the scientific study of therapeutic dose nutrient therapy, a science that many world leading doctors and health professionals are involved in. It was pioneered by Linus Pauling, arguably the greatest scientist America has ever produced and the only man to have been awarded two Nobel prizes in separate categories, being Chemistry and Peace.
